How to file your taxes | Adulting

With the tax deadline looming, you might want to make sure you have everything together to file your taxes.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Filing your taxes can be, well, taxing, especially if it’s your first time doing it. So let’s jump right into it.

First, what you want to do is get all your forms together from the last year. Those will be your W-2s, 1099s and others. The most common form you’ll need is a W-2. You should get a form from all of your employers from the previous year around January or February. Those forms will help determine how much you earned the previous year so the IRS can figure out how much you should be getting back.

Next, you’ll figure out your deductions, like your dependents. Those are the people you care for in your household, like your kids. And no, dog moms, your furry friend doesn’t count.

Third, make sure you have the right forms. One big mistake people make is using the current year’s forms instead of last year’s. Otherwise, you’ll have to re-do the whole thing.

Finally, make sure your forms are all filled out and you send them to the IRS. You can either mail them or do it all online through services like TurboTax.

Make sense? If all of this is still confusing, you can always hire someone to file your taxes for you so you don’t have to worry about it all. And don't forget, the tax deadline is April 15 every year!
