Jordy Nelson: It 'would be hard to say no' if Aaron Rodgers asked him to return to Packers

Former Green Bay Packers receiver Jordy Nelson, who last week made it known he was retiring after one year with the Oakland Raiders, said Wednesday on the "Dan Patrick Show" that he’d entertain the idea of playing again for the Packers … if Aaron Rodgers asked.

He's also working out the details for a one-day ceremonial contract that would enable him to retire as a Packer.

“They didn’t show any interest at all after being released by Oakland, so I don’t think that door is ever open again," Nelson told Patrick. "I have talked to (Packers president/CEO) Mark Murphy, and he’s opened up the door to come back and do the one-day deal, so we’re still working on a time to get that done, and that way I can sign a contract and retire a Packer and end where we started.”

Nelson said he was healthy but didn't want to put his body through another season of football, nor move his family again. He said Seattle showed interest when he was released by the Packers last offseason and then again when Oakland bid adieu this year, and the Raiders tried to get him back on a different deal.

“When it came down to it, we just decided not to move our family again, and go home (to Kansas) and be done and be happy with it.”

But when Patrick floated the hypothetical of Rodgers calling and asking Nelson back, the receiver sounded awfully tempted.

“That would be an interesting phone call," Nelson said. "If he truly called … asking me to come back and their need, it probably would be hard to say no. But we would have to see where we’re at, at that point.”

Nelson pointed out the Packers did make a late move for a familiar face in 2015 after Nelson tore his ACL. James Jones was released by the New York Giants in training camp and signed back on with the Packers, although this time around, Nelson would theoretically be playing under a new coaching staff with a new system.

"If that happened (that Rodgers and the Packers called), that would be a very interesting question, but my guess is that it won’t.”

Nelson also spoke about the machinations that led to his departure in Oakland. He felt the team’s addition of Antonio Brown and Tyrell Williams made him the odd man out. It was somewhat of a surprising move after the Raiders gave Nelson a $3.6 million bonus in December, only to cut him in March.
