Cold weather limits Wisconsin fieldwork

Fieldwork was limited in Wisconsin during March. The USDA says parts of the state recorded all-time low temperatures to start the month and while there were some seasonal improvements, the monthly state average was below normal.

Melting snow and additional precipitation led to reports of standing water and flooding, keeping fieldwork limited to scattered manure and fertilizer application. It’s still too early to assess possible damage to winter wheat and alfalfa.

Calving is underway in southern parts of the state, while maple trees are tapped and sap is running.

The USDA’s weekly national crop progress and condition reports resume April 1st.
