Snow supports South Dakota soil moisture levels

South Dakota ended March with plenty of soil moisture. The USDA says 99% of topsoil and 97% of subsoil have adequate to surplus soil moisture levels, following heavy snow during much of the winter. What has melted has run down the Missouri River, causing flooding in parts of Nebraska, Iowa, and Missouri.

44% of winter wheat is in good to excellent condition, compared to 21% of the crop being rated as good this time last year.

The USDA’s weekly national crop progress and condition reports resume April 1st.
