Ohio winter wheat rating down on year

Fieldwork delays were widespread in Ohio during March. The USDA says there was a wide range of temperatures and though average precipitation was lower than normal, some fields were still saturated, limiting tilling and manure application.

Spring calving and lambing stayed on schedule, but the wet conditions also prevented some producers from cleaning out barns and manure pits.

31% of winter wheat is rated good to excellent, compared to 75% a year ago, and more than 60% of the state has surplus soil moisture.

The USDA’s weekly national crop progress and condition reports resume April 1st.
