NRCS playing catch up
The State Conservationist for Michigan says anticipating the government shutdown has helped them prepare for a shortened conservation funding signup period.
Gary Lee tells Brownfield two early signup periods for the Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP) in the fall have produced more than enough requests for assistance.
“Our EQIP budget here for Michigan’s allocation was roughly $17 million. We currently have enough applications in the hopper now to spend that money. We have about a $15 million backlog on that.”
He says processing applications has been delayed some but, once finalized, funds will help farmers with nutrient and pest management, cover crops and other practices to protect natural resources.
Lee spoke with Brownfield during the recent 5,000th MAEAP Verification Celebration.
