March very wet for most of Iowa

Flooding and standing water were a problem for most of Iowa during March. The USDA says almost all of the snow has melted, leaving behind a lot of water, restricting grain movement and limiting fieldwork.

Calving is ongoing with fluctuating temperatures causing higher than normal death loss. Open feedlots are muddy and cattle have lost weight, leading to producers supplementing feed rations, tightening the already scarce supply of high-quality hay, with little to no growth reported yet this season.

The USDA’s weekly national crop progress and condition reports resume April 1st.
