South Dakota rivers expected to crest this week
So far in March, South Dakota has experienced brutal cold accompanied
by winter storms, interspersed with heavy rain. It’s meant severe flooding,
with many areas expecting record water levels and more damage to add to what’s
already occurred. A lot of roads are impassable and more might become
impassable as more snowmelt adds to water.
The National Weather Service in Sioux Falls has categorized the flooding as
major in several areas of South Dakota. The Big Sioux River in eastern South
Dakota is expected to crest at more than four-and-a-half-feet over flood stage Monday.
The James River at Huron is expected to crest at six-and-a-half-feet over flood
stage later this week. The Missouri River level at Yankton is actually stable and
well below flood stage at that location.
