Milk production up slightly in February

A dairy markets expert says milk production climbed again, even with fewer cows. Mark Stephenson with the University of Wisconsin’s Dairy Profitability Center says, “We did have milk production in the latest report that actually ticked up a little bit. We’re still under a 1% increase, but it was up from the last two months. So, we’re still producing a bit more milk than we did the year before.”

Stephenson tells Brownfield he also sees strong market demand continuing.

This past week the USDA reported February milk production increased 0.2 percent to 17 billion pounds with production per cow up 19 pounds.  The herd size was down 77,000 milking cows from last February. Michigan continues to have the most productive cows in the nation. Virginia and Illinois had the largest decrease in milk production, and South Dakota and Texas had the largest increase.

Brownfield’s Nicole Heslip contributed to this report.
