Modest increase in conventional corn interest

A Midwest seed company is seeing a modest uptick in conventional corn interest.

Wyffels Hybrids agronomist Brent Tharp says non-GMO sales are up about one to two percent this year.

“It’s not a wholesale change, I think there’s guys looking at it (and) experimenting with it.”

He tells Brownfield there has been a greater shift towards fewer traits.

“Your above and below ground traited products such as a SmartStax hybrid, they’re switching to just an above ground only in areas where the rootworm population seems to be kind of in a decline.”

Wyffels is based in Illinois and Tharp says the company also covers surrounding states as well as parts of Minnesota, Wisconsin, and South Dakota.
