Parson declares state of emergency

Missouri Governor Mike Parson has declared a state of emergency because of flooding in northern Missouri and worsening conditions along the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers.

“One of the things we’re going to have to figure out is how we’re going to fix and how to prevent this from happening so we’re going to take a good look at it.” Governor Parson told Brownfield Ag News Thursday. “Today it’s about seeing what we can do right now at the time to help with those people up there, but more importantly what can we do in the future to get this back on track and get farmland back up and going.”

Traveling with the governor to observe the damage so far is Congressman Sam Graves. Graves says there’s a good chance they won’t be able to produce anything this year, “Because either the levees are not going to be able to be repaired or the amount of water, silt – you name it – or sand that’s going to be deposited.”

Graves farms in north Missouri. Governor Parson farms in southwest Missouri.
