Dangers of electricity during flooding

Farmers and rural families dealing with flooding are being warned of the dangers posed by electricity.

Krista Lisser with the Energy Education Council says the prospect of an electrical accident is probably not top of mind when flooding occurs.

“When you are in this situation, a lot of us panic. We don’t know what to do (and) think we need to get down to the basement (and) to get the water out. But there is electricity throughout your home (and) farm, so keep that in mind.”

She tells Brownfield never attempt to turn off power at the breaker box if standing in water, and to avoid entering flood waters even on a boat.

“And regarding farm equipment and larger vehicles outside of this flooding issue as well, make sure you always look up for power lines. Make sure your vehicle does not come in contact with power lines, and if it does, always stay inside of the vehicle.”

Lisser also cautions against using electric appliances or touching electrical wires, switches, or fuses when wet or while standing in water.
