Illinois farmers tour saturated buffer process at field day

Saturated buffer systems are a fairly new conservation practice to reduce nutrient loss. A field day in Moultrie County, Illinois on Wednesday aimed to teach farmers more about them.

“It’s important that we get producers out here as well as well as agency personnel to take a look and see what these practices actually look like on the landscape, what’s required to get them in place and also have a site where we can come visit and talk more about the research as it comes in.”

Ryan Arch with the Illinois Land Improvement Contractors Association tells Brownfield the buffer shown at the field day was on the farm of Clint Robinson.

“We kind of have two systems, if you will, a traditional saturated buffer that there is an NRCS standard on already and then we are comparing that with a modified system to see if we have any gains or improvement upon the nutrient loss reductions.”

They partnered with Illinois Farm Bureau, Southern Illinois University and Natural Resources Conservation service to host the field day in Sullivan, Illinois.
