Annexstad wears Princess Kay crown during difficult time for dairy farmers

A dairy ambassador says it’s been a difficult time to champion the industry.

Emily Annexstad was Minnesota’s Princess Kay of the Milky Way in 2017.

The University of Minnesota animal science student is a third-generation dairy farmer from Nicollet County.

“It was definitely hard sometimes to see a community I care so deeply about, and I think dairy farmers are the best people I’ve ever met, so it’s hard to see them struggling.”

She points out farming is cyclical and tells Brownfield she’s hopeful the dairy market will turn around.

“I think the dairy community and dairy industry is changing, but I also think there’s a lot of new and exciting science and innovation as farmers are doing everything they can to keep doing what they love.”

Annexstad says she wants to be a part of the dairy industry for the rest of her life.

Princess Kay of the Milky Way is the title awarded to the winner of the statewide Minnesota Dairy Princess Program, now in its 65th year.
