Ohio Farm Bureau members discuss priorities with legislators

Ohio Farm Bureau members met with legislators from their districts on capitol hill Thursday to discuss top priorities.

Gary Mescher, a dairy producer from Mercer County, spoke with Representative Bob Latta of Ohio’s 5th District about water quality.

Mescher lives near the Grand Lake watershed and says the Lake Erie Bill of Rights is a concern for him.

“The Lake Erie situation is kind of like a slap in the face to me,” he says. “In my opinion, it’s giving people the right to legislate things that will put agriculture or other businesses out of business, especially when the same people are not playing by the same rule.”

Citizens of Toledo passed the Lake Erie Bill of Rights (LEBOR) in a special election in February. Ohio Farm Bureau is supporting Wood County farmer Mark Drewes, who filed a lawsuit challenging LEBOR.

Seth Middleton of Shelby County discussed the importance of trade as farmers face low commodity prices with Representative Jim Jordan of Ohio’s 4th district.

“We would like to see some finalization in the USMCA to be able to get us back in regards to two of our largest trading partners in Canada and Mexico, as well as to get some relief from the tariff situation with China,” he says.
