Northbound traffic was backed up for miles Wednesday on Interstate 81 following a crash involving two tractor-trailers south of Marion.

The crash was reported to Franklin County Emergency Services at 9:08 a.m., an operator said.

EMS evaluated patients, but he did not know how many. The coroner was not called to the scene, the operator said.

The emergency services operator said he did not know how the crash happened. Police did not release information by deadline.

A reporter traveling on I-81 saw one tractor-trailer with most of the cab and part of the trailer on the passenger's side smashed in. Another tractor-trailer, which had been blocking part of the highway, had been towed.

A tractor-trailer sustained significant damage to its cab and part of the trailer after striking another tractor-trailer at about 9 a.m. Wednesday, March 13, 2019, on northbound Interstate 81 just south of Exit 10 in Marion, Guilford Township.

A man who lives nearby and was looking at the traffic from Horst Road, which runs parallel to I-81 in Guilford Township, told another reporter that one tractor-trailer struck the rear end of another.

Vehicles were able to pass by on the interstate about 45 minutes after the crash happened, but authorities closed the highway down between Exit 5 at Pa. 16 in Greencastle and Exit 10 at Pa. 914 soon after. By 11:45 a.m., traffic was backed up to Maugansville, Md., Google Maps showed at the time.
