Priced at $9.95, the United States Mint Rocketship comes with one Uncirculated 2019 Kennedy half dollar and one Proof 2019 Native American $1 coin whose reverse (tails) design honors American Indians in the space program. The colorful packaging for the Rocketship features images of Mighty Minters Timothy and Lina, two of seven new coin-collecting ambassadors. The delightful characters—who also include Kendra, Sophie, Alex, Eli, and Layla—are designed to pique the interest of kids seven to 12 years of age.

These will Not be marked SO too soon like the Kennedy/Apollo 11’s were.

Will be Available for a Long Period of Time

A Boatload were bought for the PL and will be cherry picked and then Returned to the Mint for those that don’t appear to be PL

There were a LOT available this morning from the Mint.

Keep in Mind If you are buying on the bay, they’ve been picked over…

  2. Larry says

Just for the heck of it I looked at the pictures of all the coins I could find on ebay. All of the ones I looked at do indeed look proof like. Kind of reminds me of the 2014 two coin 50th anniversary clad set I have. Those were special coins with the high relief features of the 1964 coins. One of the coins in that set is very proof like, the other not so much but still very nice. Still pretty much available at the original cost, but they minted almost 200K.
It will be interesting to see if the mint says something.

  3. Jerry Diekmann says

Who can be the first kid on your block to get one of these “treasures” and show it off to all the other kids on the block?

Sorry – I got lost thinking back to my childhood days of long ago. I think I will go outside now and play marbles with my friends.

  4. Sith says

Did they run out of Commemorative 50 cent pieces? Oh I see. I guess $30 for a a half dollar is too much for the kids. I know it’s to much for me.

  5. Larry says

@Jerry Diekmann – I still have a container full of all my marbles from the 1960’s. I guess I really haven’t lost my marbles!

  6. Donnie says

What, if it turns out, ALL of the Kennedys in the Rocketship Set are, as Larry has observed, proof-like? Even the #1 skeptic, Cag, commented earlier that PCGS had never before used a PL designation with a Kennedy half. Now, PCGS is suddenly bringing out this designation with the 2019 D Kennedy in the Set. Do I have that correct, Cag?
Is there anyone associated with this Blog who can get a definitive explanation from a Mint official as to whether a special treatment was used to give these Kennedys a PL quality?

  7. cagcrisp says

@Donnie says,”Now, PCGS is suddenly bringing out this designation with the 2019 D Kennedy in the Set. Do I have that correct, Cag?”

Currently PCGS has 3 labels created for PL from the rocketship offering…

All three labels start with money coming Into PCGS pocket.
    …And…
All three labels end with money leaving your pocket.

The Only reason these things have a premium is the PL “designation “…
…AND…the Only way to get the “designation “
    …IS to have them Graded…

    Imagine that…

  8. cagcrisp says

“Oh when will they ever learn, when will they ever learn?”

    Peter, Paul and Mary…

  9. Donnie says

Throwing away money to get a clad coin graded? Hardly.

I see the rocketship sets invite you to insert your own quarter into the top slot of the rocket. Doesn’t this slot beg for an uncirculated 1969 P or D quarter, as this was the year of the moon landing?

@Cag: A tinge of sarcasm or a heaping spoonful?

  10. Buzz Killington says

It is simply beyond me how anyone can get excited about a special finish on a clad half dollar in an age where coins of any kind barely circulate anymore. Even the parking meters take credit cards now!

Multiply this special finish times 25 over the next few years, and see who cares. I know I don’t care already.

Cag is right again, these labels originate with money going into PCGS’s pocket and out of yours. If you are waiting for someone to come along to bail you out of this “investment” good luck.

  11. KEITHSTER says

Says it right on site struck on special presses with greater force now how special is that ? Producing a sharp intricately detailed image! Thought they had the PL. on one of the 4 coin silver Kennedy set but not sure never had a coin graded? At first we thought it was some of the first fruits but seems it turned out to be from the end of the dies life as the die would get polished up from banging all that nickel ? So on goes the hunt for the PL. And what happened to the charge for so many happy returns? As to killing Buzz Some have been collecting the Kennedys since 64 so can’t see no reason to stop now. Find most complainers did not get one heck need 1 ? Well Good Luck All”>”>$<"<"<"<"<"

  12. Mintman says

Spoke to PCGS bulk today—seems like they are considering all to be PL—I suppose it is now all about the numerical grade

  13. Larry says

Well the 5 OZ Apollo puck showed up in the mail today. I think it was worth the wait. Truly a stunning coin. It just shows you how great all of the 5 OZ coins could have been had they been proof.
So, on to the next gimmick!

  14. Donnie says

Keithster: What site are you referring to in which it says the Rocketship Kennedy coins are struck on special presses with greater force?

Mintman: Thanks for the information verifying that all the Rocketship Kennedys are considered to be PL. If you check back to my 4:40 p.m. comment, I speculated that was likely the case. Now I feel vindicated.

Cag: I’d guess that there’s no need to have these Kennedys graded to get the PL designation—since they all are considered as such. Imagine that.

  15. Larry says

Let’s see, $27.95 for the American Legion 100th Anniversary clad half. What? You can by the entire 2019 clad proof set for $27.95! And you even get the “gimmick” W penny. Seriously, how does the mint expect to sell any of these clad halves? What am I missing (I am usually missing something)?

  16. KEITHSTER says

You go to the Mint site then to the mint sets there it explains that the uncirculated finish is made that way. And the rocketship Kennedy being of that finish would also be made that way. Also they are no longer sold out so coming soon to a computer near you there should be about 3,000 returns made available . How stupid is that? They did the same thing with the Pictured Rocks quarters mark them all sold out then brought them back. ? No way to do it but they seem to need the money and screwyou if you don’t like it ??? Well Good Luck To Us??

  17. Larry says

I did, as usual, miss something. there is a $5.00 surcharge on the American Legion half. Even without the surcharge, way over priced. The 2018 American Innovation Proof Dollar is $6.95! The price just does not make sense.

  18. Jerry Diekmann says

Hi, Larry – I remember as a boy playing marbles and “poison”, which was kind of like croquet with marbles – you had to shoot the marble into a series of holes we dug in the dirt until we reached the last hole. Then our marble became “poison” and if we could hit the other guys’marbles, they were ours to keep.

Mind you, this was back in the innocent – at least for us – 1950s, when we had “daters” to throw in the pot, “shooters”, pirries (clear colors), aggies – revered for being so expensive maybe 75 cents or so, boulders, and steelies. Cat’s eyes hadn’t come along yet – that’s how old I am! I am front the West Coast – the names for the different kinds of marbles may have been different in other parts of the country.

Can you think of any young person ever playing marbles today. I remember an old Norman Rockwell illustration of an expert girl shooter with a groupof anguished boys around herlooking in dismay as she was taking all of their marbles. Like I said, back in the good old days which we will never see again. I don’t want to wish my life away, but I am glad I was born when I was – and I got to experience the birth of rock and roll and the classic years of rock and roll.

Since this is a coin blog, I have to say that our 10 cents or 25 cents weekly allowance we got were all silver coins and buffaol nickels were still around, and of course theonly cents you ever saw were the Lincoln wheaties. But I was too young then to care about saving coins – they all went for comic books and baseball cards, and cards that showed the cars fro the early 1900s to the brand new models – 1955. Sadly, they are allgone now.

  19. Buzz Killington says

Larry, I think you owe @cag a nickel for beginning a post on this blog with “Let’s see….”

    @cag —

Remember when DJT wanted to appoint his personal pilot as head of the FAA? Instead, he appointed no one.

    “The best people….” Indeed.

  26. Donnie says

    @maddogdday:
Your rocket Kennedys didn’t seem PL but just nice and lustrous? I’d guess that “nice and lustrous” are within the guidelines for PCGS to deem the entire batch proof-like.
It seems that the PL designation is now generously used.

Boeing has nominated Nikki Haley to join its board of directors at the company’s annual shareholders meeting on April 29.

Acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, who is expected to be named to the post, worked for 31 years at Boeing.

  29. Buzz Killington says

I want Boeing to succeed as much as the next person, but confidence in the safety of air travel is much more important, and in fact, essential to the long-term success of Boeing.

All of this would be par for the course, IF our dear leader didn’t promise to drain the swamp of these kind of dealings.

Worse yet, I think even Boeing acknowledges there is some kind of problem with the autopilot software. If we have lost intellectual honesty, we have lost everything.

    John Q Coinage:
Weren’t you going to give us your opinion on the Rocket Kennedy’s as to their suppposedly PL appearance? Or do you not yet have the Sets?

    Cag:
As per the last sentence in your 2:42 comment: Who is this Hung So Soon guy? A Chinese Mint employee? And why is he involved with putting up an SO sign?

  34. Jerry Diekmann says

Donnie – “Hung So Soon” is a relative of one of the four pilots who crashed the Asian 214 plane in San Francisco back in 2013. Their names were erroneously listed as Captain “Sum Ting Wong”, Wi Tu Lo, Ho Lee Fuk and Bang Ding Ow. San Francisco television station KTVU fell victim to a prank regarding the names which were double entendres. BTW, KTVU was (is) a Fox -owned TV station.

  35. Qui Transtulit Sustinet says

At least for now, the U. S. Mint website shows 80,000 2019 Lowell five ounce silver bullion ATB’s sold.

  36. Alma says

Its just how all coins will look from now. New better tech at the mint. In the future all circulated coins will look shinny like proofs. The denver kennedy roll coins look the same as the rocketship coins PL. Its just an uncirculated 2019 quality kennedy coin.

  37. Alma says

Its just 2019 quality coin. Look at the quality in proofs from like 1964 compare to todays quality. Its just the changing technology at the mint. 2019 and beyond circulated coins will look like PL. Nothing to se here

  38. cagcrisp says

@Donnie, go back to your other alias

I Wouldn’t have accused him of pumping.

    I Know him…I Don’t Know Donnie…

  39. KEITHSTER says

Cagcrisp your prices were spot on as there up now! I thought the Kennedy rolls are out in may on the 1st. and are of circulating quality? And one would think that all the rockets should not be PL. Surely not the ones that are left? Only in for some clad tomorrow but sooner or later? SO Good Luck All”><"

  40. John Q. Coinage says

I had not seen the Rocket sets till I got home, 3 of ten look almost proof, but not real reflective fields, as for the other 7 they look like the 1971 JFK from the mint sets that were very shiny & kind of P/L but very cladish in color,if that makes sense…… Not sure if I want to give them away of not, but they are great gifts with the prospect of the kids (1, 3 & 11 months…) having something MAYBE rare…but again it’s clad……we’ll c

  41. Foxman69 says

Someone said pcgs was offering graded rocketship Kennedy…I haven’t seen any offered yet…not many from NGC…Coin Vault had them out of the gate…I am Leary of spending any money to acquire the”PL” designation…the Kennedy’s coming in rools & UNC sets may be the same…then what?
