USDA projects record meat production

The USDA projects another year of record meat production in 2019. Total red meat and poultry production is expected to be 104.7 billion pounds this year, up 2.3 billion from last year’s current high-water mark, with a 4% increase in pork to 27.34 billion pounds and a 3% rise in beef to 27.61 billion.

The USDA also expects record broiler chicken production of 43.1 billion pounds along with record egg production of 9.13 billion dozen.

Estimated exports are higher for beef, pork, and broiler chicken meat, while prices are expected to be higher for cattle and broilers, but hog prices could decline.

These projections were made at the USDA’s Ag Outlook Forum.
