Yes, there are snowflakes in L.A.

Snow was reported in and around Los Angeles on Thursday afternoon, including such normally balmy locales as Hollywood, Malibu and Pasadena.

One Twitter user, "Dex," tweeted "seeing sleet right now in Canoga Park! I thought I left this behind in Maine, I think it followed me!"

Also on Twitter, teacher Amy Buss said students at her school in Thousand Oaks "all emerged from classrooms to marvel at this unexpected phenomenon."

The Rose Bowl Stadium Twitter account simply said "Let it snow!"

The National Weather Service in L.A. confirmed this, noting that "there have been multiple reports of small hail, graupel, and even a few snowflakes." (Graupel is the official term for snow pellets.)

A freeze warning was in effect Thursday night until early Friday for Los Angeles County valleys and the Santa Monica Mountains but not in the city. Temperatures could drop as low as 27 degrees. No additional snow accumulations was expected, the weather service said

The snow is due to an unusually cold weather system that's spinning over southern California and the Desert Southwest, the weather service said.

Snow also fell this week in Las Vegas.
