Minneapolis endures snowiest February on record, with blizzard possible this weekend

Sure, we all know it snows in Minnesota, but this month it's been over the top.

With 31.5 inches of snow as of Wednesday, this is now the snowiest February on record in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis/St. Paul. The 9 inches of snow the city received Wednesday pushed it past the previous record of 26.5 inches, set in 1962.

According to CBS Minnesota, the last time 30 inches of snow fell in a single month in the Twin Cities – in December 2010 – the Metrodome roof collapsed. 

Wednesday's snow in Minnesota was part of a sprawling storm system that brought bad weather to much of the eastern half of the nation. 

“We’ve had so many (weather) systems that we’re kinda running out of places to put this snow,” Tyler Hasenstein, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Chanhassen, told the Minneapolis Star-Tribune. 

Nearby St. Cloud, Minnesota, has also slogged through its record snowy February, with 22 inches as of Wednesday.

And it's far from over: Heavy snow and strong winds are forecast for Saturday and Sunday, which "could cause blizzard conditions," the weather service said.

“It looks like a pretty potent storm,” said Hasenstein, according to the Star-Tribune. “So be wary of that.”
