Camp report: Hitters have a rough day with poor weather looming

On the field: The Brewers had no issues getting their workout in on Wednesday, with sunny skies and dry conditions somewhat mitigating the cold temperatures.

The first rounds of live batting practice took place, with the pitchers not surprisingly winning most of the battles.

"You hope you remember how to hit," is how manager Craig Counsell described the initial few sessions. "It always makes you remember how hard hitting is. It’s a process for these guys. It’s spring training for a reason.

"You let them work out the rustiness. That’s the point of it."

The team's workouts Thursday and Friday appear to be in question, however, with a storm moving into the area that's expected to drop a good amount of rain.

"If it rains, then we have to do something different," Counsell said. "That’s the plan right now. Smart phones have made everybody a weatherman. That’s what I've learned."

Weather: 50 degrees, mostly sunny.

Scoreboard: First Cactus League game, Saturday vs. Cubs in Mesa.

Mauricio Dubon said his gloves have pink initials and a birth date as a nod to his girlfriend, Nancy.

Cactus Juice: Mauricio Dubon cuts a fashionable figure on the field, sporting short, baggy pants and high socks and using gloves that have pink stitching and embroidery.

Dubon said the pink is both a look he likes and a nod to his girlfriend, Nancy, whose initials and birth date he has sewn into the thumb.

"It stands out a little bit," he said with a smile. "I always like to stand out. And I do it for her, just to remind her how she helped me out getting on a good path as a player and as a person."

Countdown: 35 days until the Brewers’ season opener on March 28 vs. St. Louis at Miller Park.
