Delayed planting concerns begin to creep up

Thoughts of planting delays are creeping into the minds of farmers as another snowstorm moves across a big portion of the Midwest.

Jamie Beyer and her husband grow corn, soybeans, wheat, sugar beets and alfalfa in the Red River Valley near Wheaton, Minnesota.

“We’ve sort of been accustomed to wet springs, and from what I understand the snowfall we have now sort of mimics what we had in 2013 as far as precipitation.”

She tells Brownfield they’re preparing for similar conditions by arranging enough labor to get through a wet spring.

Many farmers dealt with excessive moisture this past fall, but Beyer says they were fortunate.

“I think for moisture levels, we were looking pretty good going into this winter. So certainly that’s going to play a factor, and also what the spring thaw brings us. How quickly that happens could change everything for us.”

Minnesota is on pace for record snowfall in February, with more snow forecast this weekend.
