African swine fever spreads to Vietnam

African swine fever has been detected in Vietnam.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development confirm the virus was recently found in two northern provinces.

Eight cases have been reported so far, and pigs from the effected farms are being culled.

Local authorities are testing neighboring farms and have initiated measures to contain and disinfect the area.

ASF continues to spread in other countries as well.  China reports a 26th province, which borders Vietnam, has tested positive for the virus.

In Romania, the outbreak has worsened to well over 1,100 cases since first being detected there in 2017, with two large swine-producing counties being hit for the first time last week.

African swine fever was discovered in pork products being smuggled into Taiwan, Japan, and Australia earlier this month.
