Santa Paula crash into light pole sends 2 to hospital

This was the scene of a single-vehicle crash that sent two people the hospital Friday night in Santa Paula.

Two people were hospitalized after a vehicle crashed into a light pole in Santa Paula, authorities said Saturday.

The crash was reported at 8:04 p.m. Friday in the 100 block of East Santa Maria Street.

Authorities arrived and found one vehicle had crashed head-on into a light pole. A 30-year-old male passenger was trapped inside and had to be extricated by the Ventura County Fire Department, authorities said. He suffered moderate injuries.

After the crash, the driver reportedly fled west on Santa Maria Street and was later found by officers, Santa Paula police reported. The driver tested for a blood alcohol content above the legal limit of 0.08 percent, according to police.

Both the driver and the passenger were taken by ambulance to Ventura County Medical Center in Ventura for treatment of injuries caused by the crash.

Police said they intend to arrest the driver on suspicion of driving under the influence, pending a search warrant and the driver’s release from the hospital. The criminal investigation is ongoing.
