Wide-ranging temps; active pattern all to continue

Western storminess will gradually shift eastward, allowing widespread, locally heavy precipitation to taper to scattered rain and snow showers. Still, coastal and mountainous areas of California could receive additional precipitation totaling 2 to 6 inches.

As Western storminess wanes, significantly below-normal temperatures will continue to dominate the West.

Meanwhile, a series of disturbances will affect the central and eastern U.S., with 5- day rainfall totals expected to reach 1 to 3 inches across the interior Southeast. In most other areas, precipitation will be light, although late-week snow will blanket areas as far south as the middle Mississippi Valley and the central Appalachians.

During the weekend, above-normal temperatures should be limited to the Deep South.

Looking ahead, the 6- to 10-day outlook calls for colder-than-normal conditions nationwide, except for above-normal temperatures in the Southeast.

Meanwhile, wetter-than-normal weather will dominate the country, with below-normal precipitation limited to parts of northern California and northern New England.
