Analyst considers Electric Vehicles very over-hyped

An analyst dismisses concerns electric vehicles (EV’s) will soon displace fuels like ethanol.

Pavel Molchanov with Raymond James and Associates spoke during the National Ethanol Conference in Orlando Tuesday.

“Having covered all kinds of sustainable, green technologies for over a decade, electric vehicles are probably the most over-hyped of all these things.”

While public awareness for electric vehicles seems to be high, he says EV’s make up just two percent of global auto sales eight years since debuting on the market.

Molchanov does anticipate market-share to climb to five percent by 2020, and 16 percent by 2025.

“All of you will still have plenty of gasoline engines to supply, whether it’s 10 percent blend, 15 percent, even 85 percent (ethanol) blends. There is not going to be any collapse in gasoline fuel consumption anytime soon.”

He says that will certainly be true for at least the next five to ten years. In fact, Mochanov forecasts higher demand for traditional gas and ethanol during that time.
