One year later, Parkland survivor shares heartbreaking photo taken before deadly shooting

A senior at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High shared a heartbreaking photo Thursday taken just before a gunman opened fire killing 17 people at her high school in Parkland,  Florida, last year.

Natasha Martinez shared a photo on Twitter taken on Valentine’s Day 2018 "about an hour before all our lives changed for the worst."

Martinez, recalled the moment when the photograph was taken by Rain Valladares, the school's yearbook editor, in an interview with the New York Times last year.

“I remembered how I felt that morning,” Martinez, a yearbook photographer, told the Times. “I was on my way to fourth period, Spanish, and I was like, ‘Rain!’ It made me really emotional.”

Valladares shared the image last year along with a photo of Emma Gonzalez, another survivor who has become a vocal gun-control advocate in the wake of the shooting.

Thursday marks one year since a gunman walked into the freshman building at the sprawling high school with a bag containing, among other things, a semiautomatic rifle. In six minutes of shooting, more than 100 rounds were fired, 17 students and staff were killed and 17 were wounded.

On Thursday, students returned to Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School with flowers for the memorial garden in front of the school.
