The 2019 Native American $1 coin reverse (tails) design depicts renowned engineer Mary Golda Ross writing calculations. In the field behind, a group of stars indicates outer space. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and $1.

The coin’s obverse (heads) will continue to feature Sacagawea carrying her infant son, Jean Baptiste, by sculptor Glenna Goodacre. Inscriptions are LIBERTY and IN GOD WE TRUST. The year, mint mark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM are incused on the edge of the coin.

  12. cagcrisp says

Just Amazing how Bad a Rollout the 5 oz. Puck has been.

From a 5 minute SO as predicted by the Mint Director to a Never SO.

Someone (or more than 1 someone) Should lose their job over not having adequate Inventory on hand.

In the private world, heads would Roll…

  13. Jerry Diekmann says

cagcrisp – with all the returns starting to show up for the 5-oz, silver Apollo coin, maybe I and some other poor souls could have a chance of receiving our coins before the actual anniversary of the moon walk on July 20. Right now I should expect to recive my BO coin just in time for Halloween.

The Mint is a wonder in having to deal with a monopoly. I tell you, you just can’t make up these numerous stories of the Mint’s mis-operations.

In all fairness to the Mint – I try to be fair – I didn’t order this coin fr a couple of weeks after it had first been listed. I have never bought a 5-oz. silver coin, and only decided to take the plunge since it was still available and several collectors on this blog who had already received their coins had posted how beautiful the coin was and how happy they were to have purchased it. So, a thank you goes to all those posters out there!

  14. cagcrisp says

    @Jerry Diekmann …

The puck is a Beautiful coin. No doubt about it. The Mint should have NEVER offered the coins until the Mint had adequate Inventory.

Just a very simple One Line Statement “Due to production concerns the 5 oz. Apollo 11 will have a Delayed Launch on xxxxx”

There has been many a space mission scrubbed for a Later Launch…

  15. cagcrisp says

Of ALL the Apollo 11 offerings…

…The Kennedy had the ONLY potential for Long Term Appreciation.

…And that will only be until the Mint comes up with Another Kennedy Gimmick with a Lower Mintage

($53.95 for a Kennedy that you want and a Proof half that is worthless)…

  16. Jerry Diekmann says

I was wondering if the Mint just lifted the portrait of the young lady mill worker on the Lowell quarter and placed it on the NA dollar coin?

With all due respect to Lowell and the textile industry history, this series of quarters is supposed to be AQTB – America the Beautiful”. My wife and I were able to visit New England for the very first time a couple of years ago. It is a truly historic and beautiful area. But why not use the natural history of these states to show off their beauty? I’m glad that Massachuisetts and New Hampshire and the other NE states have had the foresight to preserve these large brick buildings, which are now living second, third, and maybe ninth lives after their main mission ended. But why not depict a special natural feature as the Cape Cod National Seashire?

Thje Mint started making this mistake with the Perry’s Victory” column on the Ohio quarter and then carried the mistake even further with the nonsensical Saratoga quarter for New York. Collectors will recognize several other photos of people carrying flags, guns, and the like since that time. I have no objection to including such historic but man-made creations such as the Mt. Rushmore and Ellis Island quarters since they signify such very important events in our national history. But I’m guessing most people living in Ohio or New York, for example, could not tell you very much at all about the location or meaning of events depicted on their coins.

I think the key distinction the Mint may have missed is showcasing places and not events. That’s just my take on the ATB quarters and may be one reason why they pale in popularity compared to many state quarters, which also suffered from some poor designs. It’s really a case of alost opportunity to show off the beauty present in all our states.

  19. Qui Transtulit Sustinet says

As previously mentioned…many of us purchased the five ounces of convex/concave, reeded, proof, .999 fine Apollo silver commemorating the goal setting, planning and achievement of landing humans on the Moon and returning them safely to Earth in order to appreciate and enjoy the coin, and the events it recognizes, not as a gambling endeavor.

Constantly reducing our numismatic hobby to mainly mercenary considerations diminishes it much more than Mint coin offerings arriving later than they should.

Flippers may not have gotten as many coins as they wanted as fast as they wanted…I won’t be losing any sleep over it.

Most collectors are willing to wait for an issue they really want, as noted above.

Bragging about correctly predicting that the Kennedy set would be the first to sell out after making multiple earlier failed “slam dunk” prognostications about it and the other Apollo offerings is really a reach and quite funny.

  20. John Q. Coinage says

A sellout is good on the A11 but the clad one was most likely but it’s clad…whatever…. you’re right Cag next will be a 75k JFK, then whatever….I do NOT need every JFK the USM can concoct, or Congress! THe puck situation is ridiculous, EVERY person I recommended & got on this is pissed off & WILL NOT BUY again from the losers @ the USM, from me, they lose 3 potential new lemmings…… PS They also cancelled the pucks, kept the gold…..

  21. cagcrisp says

@John Q. Coinage says,”THe puck situation is ridiculous, EVERY person I recommended & got on this is pissed off & WILL NOT BUY again from the losers @ the USM”

With the Negative puck number, looks like a Lot agreed with you…

  22. Anthony says

I think the remaining Apollo 5 oz. silver will EVENTUALLY get close to a sellout.

It IS the MARQUEE coin of the 4 coin program & if you only want just one Apollo coin it definitely is THE one to have.

That said, it asks huge amount of patience from customers to go ahead and place orders that can take up to 8 MONTHS to fulfill! That is just asinine !!!

For sure, Mint Director Ryder should have been aware of the logistics behind scheduled minting this coin and also completing the ongoing ATB 5 oz. coins. When he stated the Apollo 5 oz. would “sell out in ten minutes” it set up everyone to believe a COMPLETE SELLOUT would occur fast with order fulfillment in days or weeks .

Speaking for myself I’m OK with waiting for my Apollo 5 oz. for a May 1 delivery but many other collectors are rightfully angry about it!

  23. Sith says

Jerry Diekmann – I disagree with Perry. The column is actually is part of the park, but the rest is true.

cagcrisp -Thank you again for the numbers.

  24. Sith says

@Anthony – That might be true but only after they lower the mintage. I suspect they will lower it to 75K or 80K considering the problems. Then again its a commemorative so I’m not sure if they can do that without congressional authorization

  25. Buzz Killington says

I have to respectfully disagree with @cag concerning the JFK Half as the only thing with long term appreciation potential.

100K is too high of a mintage, even for a Kennedy half completist (if such collectors exist anymore) to bring a long term premium, especially because it’s just clad. And when you talk about “appreciation” it has to hold and then build on what seems to me to be an extremely high issue price for two clad halves with a 100K mintage.

I think the silver dollars and gold fives have a better chance of appreciating, just based on melt value. But for investors, this wasn’t your issue.

I still like collecting coins, but I am going to be extremely particular about premium over melt for future purchases.

  26. Cal G. says

Thinkin the artist could have put the rocket as her pen, creating a new era in mint coinage. Anyone ready for an obverse design change? Maybe have the little baby updated, grown up, with some tats and earbuds.
Anyway, I gave up with US Mint Proof coins about 5 years ago. I got irritated with the particles of lint that were struck into the coins, leaving horrible marks here and there, ALWAYS in a prime viewing spot(and, ruining any chance of a PR70 grade). I remember getting THE most beautiful Kennedy’s, some true early strikes that had perfect crisp letters and stunning mirrors, and off-the-charts contrast….then, flipped them over, and found the lint marks….game over.
Now, hearing about the delays, the returns(cherrypickers keep the best and send back the rejects…for the rest of us to purchase), I’m out of the game.
It’s time to revamp the Roosevelt Dime and Washington Quarter obverses…1946 and 1932. It’s TIME. Do ABE too.1909? Come on.

  27. Teach says

They can put a man on the moon, but they can’t mint enough 5 oz. silver saucers in time to meet the earth’s demands.

  28. 20th Century Variety Collector says

Yea, why release the Apollo coins in February? Why not build up inventory, then sell it June 20th..ONE MONTH BEFORE THE ANNIVERSARY? Why rush to sell in February and not have enough?
Why not let the build-up/fervor/interest/reminder about the moon landing spread all over the news?
    Would that have helped?

  29. CaliSkier says

Cag says: “Lower and Lower Mintages, Higher and Higher Prices and More and More Gimmicks…”

You might want to add either, “Less and Less Customers” to the above or “Less an Less Sales/Success”? Just saying…..

  30. smalltimecollector says

I have not found any of the 5oz’rsappealing enough to buy. I can’t wrap my head around them being coins(even the current soup bowl). To me, and apparent fromthe numbers it the 5 Au unc willbe the rarity. Ifelt that would be the case before launch, and appears it may be.
Regarding sell-able products. We have mottos required of all coins, and other coins have note-worthy words emblazoned. If the mint is looking at sheer sales numbers potential, one candidates four word slogan of the last election cycle could be put on coins and they would become, perhaps, more popular that the various coins and tokens handed out at service stations in the past. The director could also use frequent twitter monikers attached to politicians and come up with a sizable series.
Putme down as one who feels the design of the NA dollar is cluttered and confusing. At first glance I thought the astronaut was som sort of a steampunk influended ornament or lamp of some sort.
Lastly, I feel engravers do just that. The design choices have to be refined to have appeal to a broader audience if the mint desires to sell more.I think that means smaller denominations of higher purity more contemporary subject in fewer finishes.
The trend to offer pr, unc, rev pr, enhanced unc, of the same coinplays into the hand of the encapsulators who can add value to their pockets by creating illusions of rarity (first strikes, earlies, signatures, etc.). Leave the first day of issue to the stamp collectors.

Artie43, re the engravings. I think they may haveinterest for historical collectors. My wife occasionally buys stamp first day covers and other special offerings ( 1 every year or two). There is very little value, other than the stamp value currently. That can change. The engravings will need value added by signatures or unknown future interest. With all that, by them if you like them.

  31. Jerry Diekmann says

20th Century – You make excellent points about the issue date of the Apollo coins. Yes, I think these coins would have received much greater appreciation and greater purchases had the Mint held off putting them up for sale until later in the year, maybe May instead of January. ESPECIALLY since they had not struck near enough coins to send to customers at the time the coins were listed for sale. A REALLY BIG MISTAKE by Director Ryder and the Mint. Unfortunately, these mistakes in marketing are becoming par for the course. Others have said that if the Mint were a private enterprise and ran operations this way, they would have been outof business, and rightfully so, long ago. The Mint is slowly but surely losing its customer base and they have no one to blame but themselves.

  32. Jerry Diekmann says

CalSkier – you make a good point. Maybe cagcrisp can add “less and less customers” to his saying. It all fits.

I’m just very happy to know that a woman (a real Native American woman) was at the forefront of the Space Program. This is not a symbolic overture but a real tribute to all the women that made the Space Program possible. Were it not for the valuable contributions of these women we would have never gotten off the ground and we are all greatly indebted to this woman without whom space travel would remain a dream.

If she didn’t exist it would be necessary to invent her.

The Launch of the 2019 Lowell National Park Quarters were the Worst in Years and Years

The Launch of the 2019 Lowell National Park 5 oz. “P” puck was the Worst in Years and Years and Years

The availability of the 2019 Lowell National Park Bullion puck to the Authorized Purchasers was postponed from January 21st, 2019, until March 11, 2019, due to production/planchet problems

We will see if the so far Dismal sales of the 2019 Lowell National Park translates into Dismal sales for the Bullion puck…

The mint has learned nothing with the failure of the dollar coin program. I will never collect these until the date and mint mark are returned to the coins obverse and the edge lettering is done away with.

The Apollo 11 Kennedy set is now Currently Unavailable on the Mint web site.

@cagcrisp… The delay on the Lowell 5 oz. silver bullion very likely stems from the coining schedule fiasco for the Apollo 11 5 oz silver proofs.

The botched launch for these coins coupled with the several greatly extended delivery dates will probably result in much fewer than the maximum 100,000 minted & sold. I’m guessing perhaps only 85,000 will be the final mintage.

The 2019 American Legion commemorative series launches in mid March facing A LOT of headwinds with rather boorish designs being a significant part of the headwinds.

I Like the American Legion Gold design.

The design of the Half Dollar is Dismal.

Anyone that buys/sells commodity funds should know about a Schedule K-1 and IF you do your own taxes you do NOT want to deal with a Schedule K-1

I was looking at the fund BCI this morning. The headline is “Aberdeen Standard Bloomberg All Commodity Strategy K-1 Free ETF BCI:NYSE Arca”

    A “Commodities Broad Basket”

…SO…I want to drill down and see IF the commodities they trade are what I am looking for.

Hilarious that the blog numbers wonk calls the Apollo offerings “Over Hyped” at least five times above after previously making repetitive grossly erroneous “slam dunk” predictions about immediate sellouts of some of the same offerings.

Beware of opinions masquerading as certainties on this blog…a poster who garbs his opinions in “data and facts” clearly gets carried away with his penchant for “bold” predictions, statements, and OPINIONS.

If you are not aware of his deeply held pro gold and anti silver bias (opinions), you should be.

Cag, I l00ked @ the BCI as well, there was a humongous drop in like 2o14 ($23k to $23$?) what was THAT???? Although I’ll buy Tbill$ if THAT is what I want, as you seem to be saying TBill$ do not = a ‘commodity’ [per se…] BCI has a tight range for the last year… $21 to $26……

  50. John Q. Coinage says

Qui, although correct somewhat, the real “villan’ & Scammer & person to NOT trust is the MINT DIRECTOR he touts a “10 minute sellout” A totle LIE & BS he KNOWS such because; 1) They went to BO after 5 min, then 5hr later BACK UP TILL OCTOBER…yeah people wanbt to wait till Halloween. The Director clearly intended his statement to be RELIED upon by the collecting community, with the INTENT to induce collectors to buy ASAP based upon the USM’s fraudulent misreprentationS and fal$e promises, sounds like a FRAUD, if it quack$ like a Duck…. However, missing is the DAMAGE$ part of the equation so no liability for the USM or Director Trump Jr…………..

cagcrisp -“Compare that to Silver miners and you will see which commodity is underpriced and which commodity is Overpriced relatively to production costs…”

And to think that for many years the ratio of the price of gold to that of silver was 16:1. Now it’s about 83:1. I think the actual disparity now is a combination of gold being overpriced and silver being underpriced.

Is that how you see the current situation?

And like I have said before, neither PM has been a very good investment long term, going back to 1975. Silver has actually lost in buying power over that time when you compare it to inflation over that time.
Yes, some people may have made profits on selling silver and gold during their occasional price spikes, but relying on price spikes and volatility is not a very good way to become a winner in investing.
