Soybean weed management picture looks brighter

The weed management picture for soybean growers has brightened considerably over the past couple of years with the development of new technologies like Xtend, Enlist, LibertyLink GT27 and HT3.

Scott Nelson, director of the Iowa Soybean Association’s on-farm research network, says while they’re probably not long-term solutions, the new systems will help growers manage weeds until new modes of action are developed by the crop protection industry.

“The next new active ingredient has been advertised as coming out in ten years. There may be some new actives that arrive earlier, they just haven’t been announced,” Nelson says. “What some of these new herbicide traits give us is an opportunity to keep managing weeds profitably for the next five or ten years until new active ingredients can be developed.

“They’ll keep us going—keep us profitable—until the next active.”

Enlist and HT3 soybeans are at various stages of approval. Check with your soybean supplier for details.
