'SNL' reminds Virginia state officials when it's OK to wear blackface: Never

By now, you'd think Virginia state officials would be clear on blackface and how it's never OK to wear it. But just in case they're not, "Saturday Night Live" is here to explain.

In a sketch, a black staffer (Kenan Thompson) questioned a room full of white state officials to make sure there were no other blackface scandals waiting to erupt following those of Gov. Ralph Northam and Attorney General Mark Herring.

"As head of the ethics committee, I have to ask, has ANYBODY ELSE worn blackface in college?" he said. "Tell me now so we can get ahead of this."

A young staffer named Glenn (Pete Davidson) sheepishly raised his hand and asked, admitted to dressing up as Mr. T.

"See, I didn't get mad," Thompson's character answered. "Did you take pictures, Glenn?"

As Glenn shamefully hung his head, the ethics official said, "So you did. Well, that's not good but you did the right thing coming forward."

That opened the floor to a Pandora's box of ignorant questions about blackface.

"What if the blackface was just part of your costume of a black person?" asked an official named Tom (Beck Bennett).

"Does it count if you did it in the '80s?" asked a female politician (Cecily Strong).

"Of course not, it was funny and cool in the '80s," another named Phil (Mikey Day) answered.

"Gonna stop you right there," Thompson's character said sternly. "It does still count and it was never funny or cool."

After being pelted with even dumber questions ("What if the costume won a blackface contest?"), the ethics official took another poll.

"Who's worn blackface in the '80s?"

The few hands that hadn't gone up did so when he added, "Or the '90s?"

The beleaguered ethics chair finally declared, "So that's everybody. Well, I'm gonna take a two-week lunch ... I advise you all to delete your Facebook folder named 'Halloween' and hope for the best."
