Stats show the need for an accurate census count for 2020.
  • Increasing participation in the decennial census and lowering the chances for population undercount

A memorial supporting the efforts for an accurate census count passed the House State Government, Elections and Indian Affairs Committee Wednesday.

House Memorial 6 (HM 6), sponsored by Rep. Tomás Salazar (D - District 70) and Rep. Roybal-Caballero (D - District 13), called for investment in robust outreach efforts across New Mexico in preparation for the 2020 Census.

It increases participation in the decennial census and lowers the chances for a population under-count, a  new release from the Center for Civic Policy stated.

“The 2020 Census represents over $7 billion in federal aid at stake to maintain essential programs for our families’ well-being like SNAP, medicaid, Section 8, transportation, early (education) and many others," CEO for the Center for Civic Policy (CCP), Oriana Sandoval said.

“HM 6 is a good step to ensure there is an accurate count of New Mexico’s families and children by beefing up the support for the census preparations that are already underway. By taking immediate action, we can help to ensure every New Mexican family receives their fair share of representation and federal funding for vital public services for the next 10 years."

Accordingly, the Center strives to provide the public with accurate and current information about the policy issues that impact the life of their communities, and above all, to engage and involve underrepresented communities in these critical decision-making processes.
