Man found dead outside car on I-81 killed by gunshot to his head, police say

Pennsylvania State Police say a man whose body was found outside of his black GMC Yukon Monday night along Interstate 81 in Dauphin County died from a single gunshot wound to the head after a road-rage incident.

An autopsy Tuesday determined that Tyrone M. Shaw, 46, of Roselle Park, New Jersey, died of a gunshot wound to the head, according to a news release issued by state police Tuesday night.

State police say troopers discovered a road-rage incident took place, but it wasn't connected to Shaw and his GMC Yukon. "Public tips and investigator information revealed earlier (Tuesday) that the victim and his vehicle were observed on the shoulder of the interstate from 6:30 PM-11:15 PM Monday night with a driver's side rear flat tire," police wrote in the news release.

Pennsylvania State Police released photos of a possible road rage incident that may have led to the death of a man on I-81.

A state trooper encountered Shaw's vehicle near mile-marker 75 in West Hanover Township around 11:13 p.m. Its lights and hazard lights were on.

Shaw lay dead on the ground on the passenger's side between the car and the guardrail, police said.

Police held a briefing Tuesday morning and released photos that show several vehicles in the area, including the victim's.

Trooper Brent Miller said that the public is not in any danger.

"If you see something, say something," Miller said when asked about advice for commuters who may encounter incidents of road rage.

State police are looking for any commercial vehicle recording equipment that consists of a dash cam or Mobile Video Recording (MVR) footage of the location of the scene. State police said commercial vehicle companies should be able to conduct a search and see if they had tractor-trailers in the area at the time of the incident. Footage from the scene could have captured information that could help the investigation.

The GPS coordinates of the scene are Latitude: 40.343439 and Longitude: -76.7438832.

State police said the investigation is "an isolated incident directly related to the victim," adding that the public is not in any danger.

Interstate 81 northbound was closed a little over five hours during the investigation.

This isn't the first time an apparent road rage incident turned fatal on Interstate 81. On Jan. 4, 2014, Timothy Davison was shot on the interstate near the Maryland state line as he traveled from Florida to his home in Maine. Davison died later that night.

After months of searching across multiple states, John Strawser was accused of shooting Davison after allegedly mistaking his car for that of a Waynesboro couple he was following for several hours.

Strawser was also charged with the murder of his ex-girlfriend in 2015 and is currently serving a life sentence.
