Super Bowl: Awkward postgame scrum nearly ruins Tom Brady interview with CBS

Tom Brady won his sixth title with the New England Patriots, defeating the Rams 13-3 in Super Bowl LII.

As Brady took the final kneel-down to seal the game, an enormous rush of photographers and media converged on the Patriots quarterback. As is customary in these situations, the game's broadcaster gets the immediate postgame interview.

That task got off to a bizarre start for CBS as sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson attempted to conduct the interview amid the the scrum of media and personnel. Because Brady seemingly told CBS to hold on with the exclusive interview as the broadcast was ready for it, the rush of people only grew larger by the second.

Wolfson's mic was live for the entirety of the scrum. Viewers could hear a voice say, "Jesus, are you alright? Just stay tight, alright?"

Wolfson, to her credit, stayed with Brady in the difficult circumstance and eventually got that postgame interview.

"I'm not going to pull him away from (Patriots owner) Robert Kraft," Wolfson said in a phone interview with USA TODAY Sports. "I had to wait patiently. That's my job."

It looked on the broadcast that Wolfson was being crowded out despite the help of Baltimore Ravens spokesperson Chad Steele trying to create space. Besides Kraft, Brady's personal trainer Alex Guerrero and others got to Brady before Wolfson was able to offer up her questions.

"I know how it goes with a big-game situation like this," Wolfson said. "Tom wanted to go and recognize some of the people that got him there. It was not as crazy as it looked visually. We were just moving place to place (on the field)."

This was the second Super Bowl where Wolfson has served as the lead reporter for CBS. Wolfson mentioned she faced a similar scene after Super Bowl 50 when she attempted to interview Peyton Manning, who led the Denver Broncos to the title before he retired.

"I covered the SEC and saw some crazy, storming-the-field situations," Wolfson said. "I was squeezed out much the same way trying to interview Peyton Manning. It was a little more prolonged tonight, but every (major postgame situation) is kind of like that. I absolutely love it."
