Las Cruces police plan sobriety checkpoints in February

Sun-News report
Sobriety checkpoint

LAS CRUCES - With Super Bowl Sunday this weekend, the Las Cruces Police Department encourages those who consume alcohol while watching the game to plan ahead for a designated driver — someone who will not be drinking alcohol.

The moments and hours following the conclusion of the Super Bowl tend to see a dramatic increase in traffic on local roadways, police said. Anyone who witnesses a suspected drunken driver should immediately call 911 and be prepared to identify the vehicle and direction of travel.

Las Cruces police will conduct at least four sobriety checkpoints and two saturation patrols within city limits between Feb. 1 and Feb. 28.

Sobriety checkpoints and saturation patrols held by LCPD are intended to reduce and eliminate the number of motorists who drive while intoxicated.

Officers also will be on the lookout for other traffic safety violations such as drivers using cell phones, and those who fail to properly utilize seatbelts and child safety seats.
