8 must-know moments from the Screen Actors Guild Awards

LOS ANGELES – Sunday’s Screen Actors Guild Awards offered a fair share of surprise wins.

"Black Panther" roared to a best ensemble victory, Rami Malek took the winner’s stage for his role as Queen’s Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody,” Glenn Close (“The Wife”) rolled over Lady Gaga ("A Star Is Born") for best actress, and “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” won three SAG Awards.

The SAGs were also filled with shocking moments that went beyond trophy presentations and will bubble long after the show’s end – such as “Black Panther” star Michael B. Jordan’s impossible-to-miss colorful harness.

Here are eight big things that went down at the Shrine Auditorium.

1. 'Black Panther' surprises with a historic win and Michael B. Jordan's harness

There was a tremendous cry when "Black Panther" took best ensemble cast, the first time a superhero movie has won the top SAG Award. Chadwick Boseman, who stars as T'Challa, didn't even have an acceptance speech ready to go. "Well, I’ll be. I didn’t think I was going to have to speak," Boseman said from the stage.

In a style befitting the leader of Wakanda, the mythical African nation, Boseman rose to the occasion and spoke stirringly about the moment, long after the music started to urge the cast off the stage. "We knew we had something special we wanted to give the world," Boseman said of shooting "Black Panther."

He was flanked by co-star Jordan, who played fierce rival Erik Killmonger. Jordan wore a colorful harness over his black double-breasted suit, similar to the look Timothee Chalamet donned at the Golden Globes.

Rami Malek got a big hug from Bradley Cooper on his way to the stage to accept best lead actor for his role as Freddie Mercury in "Bohemian Rhapsody."

2. Rami Malek rocks us with his best actor win, hugs it out with Bradley Cooper

Malek, who is also Oscar-nominated for his performance as singer Freddie Mercury, snagged the SAG Award for best actor in a field including Christian Bale as Dick Cheney in "Vice" and Bradley Cooper in "A Star Is Born" (which took home no awards, despite leading the nominations with four).

Malek had to walk past the "A Star Is Born" table, located closest to the stage, where Cooper stood up to give him a stoic, hearty embrace.

The glam couple of the night: Emily Blunt and John Krasinski.

3. The John Krasinski and Emily Blunt show was a hit

The SAG Awards had star power in its A-list married couple, John Krasinski (nominated for Amazon's "Jack Ryan") and wife Emily Blunt (a double nominee for the couple's "A Quiet Place" and "Mary Poppins Returns").

What a show they gave: Krasinski wore the surprised/thrilled expression on camera as Blunt won for "A Quiet Place," which he directed, before giving her a hug. "I think he probably was as shocked as I was because it was very unexpected," Blunt explained backstage. She paid him one back by whooping loudly when his name was announced for "Jack Ryan." No shocks there, however, as Jason Bateman took the award for "Ozark."

Geoffrey Owens, "Cosby Show" actor turned Trader Joe's clerk, had a big "I am an actor" moment at the SAG Awards.

4. 'Cosby Show' star Geoffrey Owens gave his Trader Joe's tenure a shout-out

"The Cosby Show" star made news in September when reports surfaced that the actor was working at a Trader Joe's store. Owens was a standout in the awards' opening segment, talking about how his acting career had hit a rough patch.

“Instead of switching careers like a sane person, I took a job at Trader Joe’s to see if I could hang in there with my career. And it’s actually worked out pretty well," he said. "I’m Geoffrey Owens, and I’m an actor.”

For those keeping track, Patricia Arquette gave another speech for the ages.

5. Patricia Arquette praises Robert Mueller

The actress sent Twitter into a frenzy in 2015 when she called for pay equity in Hollywood as she accepted her Oscar for best supporting actress in "Boyhood." The "Escape at Dannemora" best actress winner (for a TV movie or miniseries) followed suit at the SAG Awards Sunday night, where she gave a shout-out to special counsel Robert Mueller.

"Thank you, Robert Mueller, and everyone working to make sure that we have sovereignty for the United States of America," Arquette said in her speech.

Things got weird in a hurry when Alec Baldwin and Megan Mullally presented together.

6. Megan Mullally banters awkwardly about sex with Alec Baldwin

Host Megan Mullally got the awards off to a cringeworthy start when she got saucy on stage with Alec Baldwin, who was presenting the trophy for best actor in a comedy series.

"Give it to me," Mullally exclaimed in a suggestive tone as she asked for the winner's envelope Baldwin held. He gave it to her. It was enough to make you thankful that there's no host for the Oscars.

A jubilant Alan Alda poses with his Life Achievement Award backstage at the SAG Awards.

7. Alan Alda's secret identity revealed

Alan Alda, 83, showed what a beloved member of the acting community he is, accepting the SAG Life Achievement Award to a standing ovation. The “M*A*S*H” star, who announced in July that he has Parkinson’s disease, gave a moving speech that included a wish: “Let's stay playful, let’s have fun and let's keep searching," Alda said. "It can't solve everything, but it wouldn't hurt."

It also didn’t hurt that Tom Hanks, who gave a touching introduction to the acting icon, revealed and repeated Alda’s true name before he changed it for show business: Alphonso D'Abruzzo.

Three was a lucky number for "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel" and star Rachel Brosnahan.

8. 'The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel' was just fantastic

This is no joke. The stars of the Emmy-winning “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” about a housewife pulled into the world of stand-up comedy, did plenty of getting up to the awards stage. The Amazon show took its first three SAG Awards Sunday: best comedy, best actress for star Rachel Brosnahan and best actor for her screen father Tony Shalhoub.
