This U.S. Mint numismatic sales report covers the week ending January 20, 2019. The Mint’s best-selling product this week was the 2019 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set (19AP), which sold 35,936 units. In second place was the West Point Mint’s 2019 American Silver Eagle one-ounce Proof coin (19EA), which sold 18,600 units. The third best-selling item this week was the 2018 American Innovation $1 Proof coin (18GA) with 18,526 sold. It’s followed by the West Point Mint’s 2019 Congratulations Set (19RF), with 1,570 individual units sold; and the 2018 U.S. Mint Proof Set (18RG), with 1,419 sold.
This week saw some minor downward adjustments for several 2017 and 2018 products.
On January 15, the Mint released the 2019 America the Beautiful Quarters Proof Set (19AP). Additionally, the Apollo 11 50th anniversary products were released on January 24 and the Thomas Jefferson Presidential Silver Medal (S803) was released today.
The following are the U.S. Mint’s cumulative sales figures for the reporting period ending Sunday, January 20. “LKS” indicates that the number given is the last known sales figure for a sold-out item. Mintage and product limits are indicated, where applicable; if a coin is in stock but is nearing sold-out status, a link to the Mint’s product page is provided. Items in italics either are scheduled for release or have been released too recently to appear on the report; items in bold are appearing on the report for the first time.

I received an email from the US Mint this morning with the headline “your silver coins are waiting for you”. Of the three coin images in the email two are last year’s commemoratives, which are not waiting for me and no longer for sale. Is anyone at the Mint reading their advertising?

Larry says
The mint shipped my Kennedy half set. Now the long wait until the end of April for the 5 Oz saucer. There is no reason it should take that long. They are only making 100K. It would be nice for an explanation from the mint, but that will never happen. The mint maybe shooting them self in the foot this time. If the secondary market value goes down by then, many may cancel their orders. Yours truly being one of them.
Anthony says
One possible reason for the Apollo 5 oz. silver backorder status could very well be the very slow process of manufacturing them.
It has been reported previously in the numismatic press that the Mint could not effectively make curved master dies for the 3″ diameter coins. Instead, each working die is cut individually by computerized machining (known as CNC or Computer Numeric Control machining.) Every working die is then hand finished and polished for proof condition strikes. In order to maintain proof quality strikes the dies only have a useful life of several hundred strikes. The CNC machining of each working die is a very slow process. I believe it has been reported that it takes some 10 hours just to machine a single die. If dies were to have a useful life of 500 strikes, the entire 100,000 coin edition would require a combined total of 400 working dies!
The hand finishing of every individual die could result in some minor variations in details and frosting and proof finishes.
Just a theory, but it might be a very good idea to thoroughly check out your 5 oz. silver coins for a possible mint error!
Teach says
My 5 oz. saucers are scheduled to be delivered next Tuesday, the 29th. My half sets are due on the 30th.
Donnie says
Anthony: If customers continue to complain about the overly long wait for the 5 ouncers, the Mint will bring in silversmiths armed with ball peen hammers to pound out perfect curvatures in the silver blanks. This should speed up the process.
As Larry pointed out, at least those who are forced to wait until May have the luxury of sitting back and seeing how things go, saleswise, with the saucers. They will have plenty of time to proceed with their orders or cancel them.
CaliSkier says
With the Mints sales in y/y in perpetual decline, they are trying to play it conservative with production runs. Having to destroy, melt, shred, waffle, etc, product that has been over produced/minted can no longer be justified, due to said lack of sales revenue. Most collectors of moderns IMO, shouldn’t really care about receiving in May, June etc. As long as it arrives! Only the flippers, slab munchers, Big Guys care about when they receive, as the “Early Bird, gets the Worm(sale)”! They need their product now to get graded and try to offload before people realize there will be no money to be made on these offerings! The only long term potential to be had IMO is for the gold issues! Unique and close to a 1/4(?)oz of gold! Maybe $ on E REV PF 70 Kennedy??
Collectibility, value for $, intrinsic value, artistic value, speculation(Hmm), memory, organizational support, worked for NASA, curiosity, “following in footsteps”, historical references, enjoyment, etc just a few reasons to purchase, other than making a buck…
Why did or didn’t you buy?

cagcrisp says
@CaliSkier says,”Perhaps a price increase Wed on Gold and Platinum products Cag?”
To get a Gold price Increase you need Gold fixes to Average $1,311.94 the rest of the period
To get a Platinum price Increase you need Platinum fixes to Average Above the $799.33 and Wednesday’s PM fix to be Above $800.00…

I want to stress the risk involved with putting personal details on a public forum on the Internet.
I think it should be discouraged if not banned for security reasons. Telling people when you’re receiving a shipment of gold coins is very dumb. Anyone requesting such information should be viewed with suspicion.
Encouraging people to share these kinds of details can and should involve some liability for the site and I urge you to not allow these types of posts.
Donnie says
If you check your order status and it says ”shipped” it does not necessarily imply that it has left the Fulfillment Center. It goes to “shipped” status after a label has been created for FedEx. My order went to “shipped” status on Friday but only the label has been created. I assume no further action will happen until after the weekend.

@SK —
To the contrary, it is nothing more than paranoia to be worried about MNB posts.
Countless people at the post office, the logistics company, and the Mint have access to your order history and delivery dates. Welcome to the 21st Century.
I’m not even paranoid, but I still keep my collection in a safe deposit box.
Larry says
@ NC Stacker- I was up watching that too. If the guy was at all ethical, he could have said the coins were still available on the mint’s website for $224.95. You have to wait until May to get them, but we have them now for a mere $375.00 more. That would be the right thing to do. At least he didn’t lie and say they were sold out, he just said they went to backorder in 90 seconds. Which might actually be true.
The only reason I like watching his show is that I get to see the coins before I get them. The 5 OZ coin sure looks good to me.
I was hoping he had the Kennedy half set, so we could get a look at the enhanced reverse proof. The show is on again tonight, so maybe then.
just another dave in pa says
It’s common sense. Do not share personal information on the Internet!
These are best practices although I just finished watching The Ballad of Buster Scruggs so there’s that.
If you haven’t seen All Gold Canyon (from Buster Scruggs) then you should drop everything and Rush to see it.

I haven’t commented for a couple of years. I just want to say that I took a pass on Boys Town, Lions Club, the Girl Scouts etc. but I am excited about the 50th anniversary of the moon landing. I was 15 back in 1969 and remember it well. I have even come to appreciate the design of the coins. So I think in the long run these coins will do fine because they mean something to many people.
cagcrisp says
I’ve signed at Waiver with my post office that I don’t even have to sign for any packages.
The post office guys just sign for me and then put in my box when “I signed” for the package.
The only time I had to sign for a Mint package in years was when I received my American Innovation coins.
Poorly designed packaging by the Mint made the box too large to fit in one of the Postal Lockers.
…And Yes…All the guys that work the desk at the Post Office know that I do coins because they ask me from time to time when I Mail packages…
cagcrisp says
When I got my American Innovations coins before Christmas there were a boatload of people waiting in line to mail packages…
And one of the postal clerks said “I know the answer but I am required to ask, Are you over 18 years of age?”
…And I answered “Yes, but I’m not old enough to buy a drink.”
So Krates says
…And Yes…All the guys that work the desk at the Post Office know that I do coins because they ask me from time to time when I Mail packages…
How do they know? They ask you what your mailing?
So Krates says
“you’re”
The clerks only ask me if it’s liquid, perishable, fragile, hazardous, etc. I’m very careful to avoid anything indicating coins/metals as are the online sellers and TPGs. I often wish I didn’t receive mint mailings to further mask my coin activity…but then I wouldn’t be able to trade a brochure for 2 ASEs
cagcrisp says
@So Krates says,”How do they know? They ask you what your mailing?”
Nope. I don’t mail coins.
I’ve got close friends that used to be postal carriers and one was a postal inspector.
Friends know friends, word get’s around, and I’ve known some of these guys for years.
Since I don’t sign for packages the only time they have a chance to talk to me is when I’m mailing a package, not receiving a package…
Buzz Killington says
I think people who handle packages know what USM packages look like.
Back when FedEx was delivering USM products, when I had to pick up at their office, I would often be asked by the Clerk — “What did the Mint issue? I see a lot of people picking up boxes today.”
It is one think not to advertise your coin activity, but another thing to be paranoid about it.
Could a worker at Provident Metals download an address history and distribute it to someone nefarious? It is possible, but if you worry about things like this, you’ll never have peace in your life.
SoKrates, don’t you do a lot of face-to-face deals? Isn’t that more fraught (if dealing with strangers) than doing anything via US Mail?
Buzz Killington says
@cag —
My old line, back when I was young enough to get away with this kind of thing, when asked “Are you 18?” or “Are you 21?” I would say “No.” And then when I was rejected, I would say, “Wait, you have to be exactly 21?” Not everyone was amused with my literal answer when I was 21+, that’s for sure.
CaliSkier says

Dustyroads says
The long range gold price chart looks really interesting to me. Over the last several years gold has managed to stake 3 higher lows, the last just recently. Price is currently above the 50 month MA, where it has been only 3 times since 2011, and all within the last few years. As golds lower trendline along it’s lower lows adds much needed support, price is being wedged up ever increasingly above the 50 MA. By the end of 2019 price in my opinion will be finding the support it needs to maintain a price level above the 50 MA, and thus in position for a sustainable rally. There’s even a head and shoulders bottom which could be forming now that the market may want to validate. If that happens we could see a push through golds present 1365 resistance level and possibly see a price above 1500. I’m not sold on that happening, however, I do see much better support by the end of the year for gold. There are some who are calling for gold to fall into the $800 area, but the chart is simply not saying that at this point. These people may have ulterior motives, or just sold on chart pattern beliefs which suggest a move reassembling companies which have experienced large bubbles.

My shipment of 5 oz coins will be arriving Wednesday. Very curious to see a 5 oz curved coin. I placed another order for 5 more and the expected ship date is May 1st. I also used PayPal for payment. I received my order this morning. WOW!! I very rarely order for myself, but did so this time as I remember that moment in 1969. The 5oz is very cool. The others are great as well. An investment? No. Though time will tell. I am going to mention to PCGS and NGC about a slab designed to hold them all together. I still can’t believe that this order was placed by cellphone in the middle of nowhere with absolutely no problems.

Those who have received the Kennedy set, do you see anything special about the enhanced RP coin? I watched two hours of HSN last night, no Kennedy set.

HarryB & Tom… So glad to hear your comments about your Apollo 11 coins. That would be great if PCGS and/or NGC could devise a holder to contain a 4 piece proof set of the Apollo 11 coins. (That’s what I aimed for, strictly for myself to have. I’m not too interested in the aftermarket values as these coins have real meaning for me. I was 17 years old when the mission happened. I have also bought a bunch of the proof silver dollars & the clad half proofs to give as gifts.
