Residents in York County might want to prepare less for snow and more for ice.

The winter storm headed for central Pennsylvania on Saturday will bring plenty of precipitation to the York area, but a lot of that could be sleet and rain, according to meteorologist Tom Kines of AccuWeather.

According to Kines, York County is now expected to get between one and three inches of snow, and perhaps closer to one. Chambersburg and Lebanon have similar forecasts.

"I think they're in the same boat," Kines said of Chambersburg and Lebanon.

The snow will start to "wander in" during the afternoon and become heavier in the late afternoon and evening. Overnight the snow will turn into a mix of sleet, freezing rain and perhaps regular rain, according to Kines.

The question that remains is when the precipitation will start to turn from snow to rain. Kines said he's more concerned the switch will happen "quicker rather than later" and it will probably be around 9 p.m.

The heavy precipitation will continue until the middle of the morning Sunday. The issue at that point will be ice, as temperatures are expected to drop from the mid 30s to the 20s by Sunday afternoon.

"Any wet spots are going to freeze up," Kines said.

Gov. Tom Wolf declared a state of emergency Friday to get more assistance for storm-related necessities. There will be a commercial vehicle ban in place between 12 p.m. Saturday and 12 p.m. Sunday, according to a news release from Gov. Wolf's office
