AFBF adopts policy on ‘cell-based food products’

American Farm Bureau delegates, at their recent annual convention, adopted policy on cell-based food products, such as lab-produced meat.

Farm Bureau president Zippy Duvall says they want to ensure a level playing field for traditional protein.

“We’re not going to be able to head it off,” Duvall says. “We need to make sure that it’s regulated by the USDA and make sure it’s named properly.”

Nebraska was one of the states pushing for the new policy. Nebraska Farm Bureau president Steve Nelson says the labeling of the new products is a big concern.

“Making sure that everyone knows what we’re talking about,” Nelson says. “If the consumer would see it in the grocery store, that they would know that it’s something different than the traditional protein that’s raised from traditional farm animals in a traditional fashion.”

The policy calls for “complete and accurate” product labels to ensure that consumers have all the pertinent information they need.
