The Illinois State Fair Coliseum is expected to be renovated in time for this year’s fair in August, after being closed for two years because of structural damage.

“The Coliseum is just a beloved structure by horse owners, breeders and exhibitors. People from all over the United States come here to show their horses.”

John Slayton, Chairman of the Illinois Fairgrounds Foundation tells Brownfield the historic building’s new name comes from the winners of a naming contest that was open to 4-H, FFA and youth exhibitors in the state.

“We got back about 80 nominations and the building will be known as the Coliseum of Champions based on this contest.”

He says new seating, air conditioning and heat is expected to be added to the Coliseum by the 2020 state fair.

The foundation is also working with farm groups on a renovation plan for the “series 25” buildings which house horses, beef and dairy cattle during the fair. The Illinois State Fair will be August 8th-18th.
