Farmers will see lower quality soybeans in 2019

Farmers will likely be facing low quality soybeans in the 2019 growing season.

Bryan Smith, a district sales manager with Ohio-based Seed Consultants says farmers should be prepared for lower-than-average germination rates for soybeans this year.

“Right now a lot of farmers are concerned with soybean germination,” he says. “We’re telling farmers to take early delivery on soybeans when they become available and get them treated and get them on the farm.”

He tells Brownfield it’s an industry-wide issue caused by wet conditions and delayed harvest.

“And that’s industry-wide,” he says. “I think most farmers should ensure that the seed size is there that they’ve ordered.”

Smith says growers should double check germination rates and be on the lookout for rates below what is on the label.
