After three years in retirement, a former Franklin County sheriff says he is ready to get back to work.

Dane Anthony, 59, will run for sheriff in the May 21 Republican primary. He hopes to unseat James Brown, who won a four-way race for the office in 2015 after Anthony announced his retirement.

"I'm ready to get back to work. I care about the office, care about people in the office. I'd just like to do it again," Anthony said.

The former sheriff of eight years told Public Opinion he has been getting calls and texts for the better part of a year from people asking him to run again. Many people have told him morale is at an all-time low in the sheriff's office, he said.

In his candidacy announcement, Anthony said he implemented a number of policies to increase efficiency and professionalism in the office.

“I have done this job for many years and know exactly what to expect," he said. “There are always ways in which we can improve the operational aspect of the job and at the same time remain focused on the needs of the taxpayers that pay the bills.  I’ve done that before and that’s what I would like the opportunity to do again.”

Asked if there is a specific issue he'd like to address, Anthony said he's heard that serving warrants has been neglected.

"The service of bench warrants has always been a top priority," he said.

Anthony said he loves serving the people of the county. Except for stints playing professional baseball with the Cleveland Indians, Toronto Blue Jays and Baltimore Orioles organizations, he is a lifelong resident of the county.

"I love the area, love the people. I want to do my part, I want to serve the people."

Anthony lives in Hamilton Township with his wife, Teresa. They have two daughters an two grandsons.
