Wisconsin dairy resolution defeated at AFBF meeting

Wisconsin’s Farm Bureau President says his delegates unsuccessfully asked the American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual convention to change its dairy policy to consider supply management. Jim Holte says, “The position that our delegates took in December in our annual meeting (was) not either to oppose it or support it, but to consider it, and that’s the language then we proposed to AFBF but they in the majority decided not to adapt that.”

Holte tells Brownfield the Wisconsin policy didn’t support a mandatory quota system or any particular supply management plan. He says national delegates voted to leave dairy policy as is. “It opposes a quota system of supply management but supports looking at other styles of supply management and how they might aid the dairy industry.”

And he says that means there’s no Farm Bureau support for a government-run quota system, but they’re open to milk producers and buyers working out production goals at the local level.

The AFBF convention wrapped up its resolution meeting in New Orleans Tuesday.
