Oxnard police nab two vehicle theft suspects with help from OnStar GPS

Oxnard police arrested two people accused of stealing a vehicle after a GPS device led to them, authorities said Wednesday.

Police were notified at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday by the OnStar GPS system of a 2019 Chevrolet Equinox.

The stolen-vehicle alert provided coordinates for police to locate and track the vehicle. Oxnard police coordinated with deputies as the car changed jurisdictions and entered Camarillo. Deputies were able to stop the vehicle in the 5000 block of Camino Ruiz, authorities said.

Ventura County crime coverage:

Police said they identified the vehicle occupants as Antonio Acevedo, 27, of Camarillo, and Zamaira Mairena, 22, of Oxnard. Both previously have been arrested in connection with stolen vehicles, according to police.

Through an investigation, police learned the victim had kept an extra key fob inside the vehicle. Investigators deduced it was likely the two suspects were checking for unlocked doors and were able to start the vehicle due to the key fob.

Authorities said Acevedo and Mairena were arrested on suspicion of being in possession of a stolen vehicle and preventing the rightful owner from their property, both felony charges. They were later booked into county jail.
