Former Ohio State QB Tate Martell says he's transferring to Miami

Former Ohio State quarterback Tate Martell announced on social media Tuesday night that he is transferring to the University of Miami (Fla.). 

The announcement comes just five days after news that Martell placed his name into the NCAA transfer portal. Martell's decision to transfer had come on the heels of highly regarded QB prospect Justin Fields announcing his intentions to transfer to Ohio State from Georgia. 

With Dwayne Haskins heading to the NFL, Martell was the only other person on the Ohio State roster in 2018 to throw a pass (though Fields is seeking eligibility for 2019). He finished the year 23-for-28 for 269 yards and a touchdown and added 128 yards on the ground, largely in mop-up duty, as a redshirt freshman. 

Rather than see how Fields' eligibility bid unfolded, however, Martell is going to a place where it appears he could be the guy. 

Miami's 2018 season was defined by inconsistency at the quarterback position as the platoon of N'Kosi Perry and Malik Rosier struggled for large stretches of the season. That duo finished with 19 touchdowns to 14 interceptions while completing 52 percent of their passes.  

While Rosier has exhausted his eligibility, Perry will be a sophomore in 2019. With Martell likely sitting out the 2019 season after transferring, per The Athletic's Bruce Feldman, new Miami coach Manny Diaz will have options to lead his offense in 2020. 

Martell, who attended powerhouse Bishop Gorman High School in Las Vegas, was a four-star recruit per the 247 composite rankings.
