FDA food safety inspections curtailed

The government shutdown has put a halt to most all routine FDA safety inspections of domestic foods. FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb says he’s taking steps to restore inspections by bringing back 150 inspectors who have been furloughed but they would not be paid.

Inspection of foreign foods continues. About seven-thousand of the FDA’s 17-thousand employees are furloughed.
