Farm Bill makes multi-county enterprise units a crop insurance option

The 2018 Farm Bill gives farmers more flexibility when making crop insurance decisions.

Beginning this year, the Risk Management Agency will offer multi-county enterprise units.

Minnesota-based farm management analyst Kent Thiesse says many farmers have been asking for this change.

“For example, say a farmer had five units (and) four of them in one county and one that might even be across the road but in a different county, and they weren’t able to include that as part of their enterprise units.”

He tells Brownfield under the new rules farmers can combine land from adjacent counties as long as it’s not eligible for an enterprise unit in another county.

“This is just for those parcels that are kind of loners out there that they’re not able to include currently in enterprise units prior to ’19.”

Thiesse says multi-county enterprise units should reduce farmer-paid premiums.

He adds there will still be a place for optional units, and recommends consulting with a trusted crop insurance agent before making any decisions.

The crop insurance deadline for spring-planted crops is March 15th.
