Preparing for the 2019 growing season

An agronomist with Ohio-based Maria Stein Grain says farmers should focus on nitrogen management as they continue to face tight margins in 2019.

“A lot of people will go ahead and write prescriptions for their nitrogen at one rate for everything, but I really think we’re wasting a lot of money,” he says. “Especially this year, the way the markets are, we need to adjust our nitrogen rates for the yield history we have in the past.”

Bill Mullen tells Brownfield farmers should also consider V5 fungicide applications to corn.

“We did some strip trials this year, that I was apart of, where we put fungicide on at a half rate to two-thirds of a rate and we were getting 20-25-bushel increases,” he says. “We can go in with herbicides or when we’re side dressing and it’s cheap insurance in that.”

He says farmers can also get ready for the upcoming growing season by making sure their planters are ready to go when the weather allows.
