Golden Globes 2019: What you didn’t see on the telecast

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – The open bar, the smoking deck, the off-camera conversations, the commercial breaks. These are things you don’t get to see while you watch the three-hour-plus (it ran more than 15 minutes long this year) telecast of the Golden Globes

But it’s what goes on inside the Beverly Hilton during the show put on by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

The open bar wasn’t exactly poppin’

The Golden Globes are famous for being one of the few awards events with free booze in a bar adjacent to the ballroom. Champagne, tequila, vodka, beer, wine, even espresso and chocolate? You got it. Except not that many stars took them up on that offer this year.Perhaps, in the year since women declared it’s “Time’s Up” for being treated unfairly, nominees didn’t want to misbehave – or perhaps even worse, be caught doing so on camera.

But there were a few sightings on the smoking deck right outside the bar. Luke Evans was in and out. Nick Viall – yes, the “Bachelor” star – was gossiping in a group about some now-resolved manufactured hot-mic drama between "This Is Us" star Chrissy Metz and "GLOW" actress Alison Brie.

Then a crash at the bar was heard. Someone dropped glasses! Oh, wait, it was just a server. Celebs, you’re boring!

Commercial break was good for mingling

Though not many famous faces were seen at the bar, stars did mingle among themselves in the ballroom. Security was especially strict this year and, at one point, guards restricted guests from wandering beyond their assigned tables.

But before that ban was put in place, we overheard some conversations. Isla Fisher and Anne Hathaway had an intimate talk about relationships. Taraji P. Henson almost cried,  laughing at something Regina King said. Saoirse Ronan enveloped Emma Stone in a warm embrace. Amber Heard whispered into table mate Derek Hough’s ear during the show. Heidi Klum and fiance Tom Kaulitz didn’t say much to each other, but they kissed often and their faces were close together for a long time.

The seating hierarchy was real

In their opening monologue, hosts Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh told Jim Carrey he'd have to move because the first tier of seats was for movies, and he was nominated for a TV role. For the bit, Carrey reluctantly moved to a new seat. 

But the joke was funny because it was true: Most of the film stars do have more prime spots than the TV actors do. For example, the casts of “A Star is Born,” “Mary Poppins Returns” and “BlacKkKlansman” were all gathered on the platform closest to the stage, while the actors from “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel“ and “Pose” were one level farther away. (HFPA members and journalists were seated behind all of them.)

Catherine Zeta-Jones, who was seated with her husband, Globe-winning actor Michael Douglas, was indeed in the television section. She was allowed up front, however, to say hello to movie nominees and her “Chicago” musical buddies, director Rob Marshall and co-star John C. Reilly.

Carrey actually did work his way back up to the first tier of seats. While there, he chatted with "Green Book" star Viggo Mortensen.

Of note: Dick Van Dyke, seated up close thanks to his film cast-member status, accessorized his tux with a "Mary Poppins"-inspired cane with a parrot head.

The audience got very loud

At times, the crowd was so loud it was hard to hear presenters. That prompted some attendees to loudly “Shush” during acceptance speeches.

But sometimes the audience made noise because of the presenters.

Carol Burnett, who received a new honorary award, was welcomed onstage with a huge standing ovation. So was Cecil B. DeMille honoree Jeff Bridges.

Guests gasped along with Glenn Close when she won for best actress. Fellow nominee Lady Gaga and her "A Star Is Born" co-star Bradley Cooper were among the first on their feet to celebrate her.

When Christian Bale won, his “Vice” director, Adam McKay, yelled “Woo!” Then everyone was cheering when Bale thanked Satan “for the inspiration” in his speech.

Some onstage moments weren't caught by cameras

After Gaga accepted her songwriting award, presenter Taylor Swift put her arm around the fellow artist and walked offstage with her.

There were other places to connect

With free L’Oreal lipstick on the sinks and makeup artists at the ready, the women's bathroom was a good place to touch up and catch up. For example, Emily Blunt and Kate Mara chatted in line.

In the back of the ballroom, Henry Winkler made friends with security guards. “Have a good night,” he told them as they beamed.

On their way out of the show, Ryan Coogler greeted Ben Stiller. “How are you, man? Nice to meet you,” Stiller said, and introduced Coogler to his daughter.

Many trains were carried

Because the ballroom itself was crammed with so many people, tables, chairs and (very vocal) security guards, ladies sporting extra-long gowns needed help to lift their trains to cross the room.

"Crazy Rich Asians" star Gemma Chan had someone else carry her lengthy blue skirt. Klum had one hand in Kaulitz’s and the other holding her flowery train behind her. Likewise, "Jane the Virgin" actress Gina Rodriguez grasped on to fiance Joe LoCicero and used her other hand to bustle her light-blue dress.

Guests got gift bags

One Golden Globe ticket got you one swag bag; either a purse or a backpack. The backpack option was packed with shaving supplies, socks, hair gel and various “manly” charcoal beauty products.

Globes guests also got a dinner with their ticket, but to eat it, they had to arrive more than two hours before the show's start time. What happened to those who came right at showtime? For them, it was the veggie/fruit/sandwich buffet or bust.

Don't worry: Your stars didn't go hungry. They were able to eat at the after-parties. But during the show, they may have longed for those snack parachutes from last year's Oscars.
