1949: The Wellsburg basketball team heads off to the state girls' tournament in Des Moines. Led by all-state first team selection Thelma Ross, in front holding 5-year-old team "mascot" Sandy Ackerman, Wellsburg beat Oakland 56-40 in the state championship game. The Register reported most of the town's population of 700 made the 80-mile drive to Des Moines, leaving Wellsburg a ghost town during tournament games. And those who didn't travel gathered in large groups to catch the games on radio.
