From the archives: Iowa girls state basketball tournament through the years

1944: The Gowrie girls bench watches their team fall behind at the close of state girls’ basketball tournament game at Drake Fieldhouse.

1945: Members of the Pomeroy team hang out in their room at the Hotel Fort Des Moines before their game with Lone Tree in the state girls’ basketball tournament.

1946: Ivy Mae Gast, who played for Steamboat Rock in 1944, talks to members of the 1946 team during the state girls’ basketball tournament.

1949: The Wellsburg basketball team heads off to the state girls' tournament in Des Moines. Led by all-state first team selection Thelma Ross, in front holding 5-year-old team "mascot" Sandy Ackerman, Wellsburg beat Oakland 56-40 in the state championship game. The Register reported most of the town's population of 700 made the 80-mile drive to Des Moines, leaving Wellsburg a ghost town during tournament games. And those who didn't travel gathered in large groups to catch the games on radio.

1963: Two of the best female players in Iowa, Everly’s high scoring Peg Petersen (left) and star guard Joan Wimmer pose under the traditional Sweet Sixteen map at Veterans Auditorium.

1966: Coach Larry Johnson lauds Everly’s new girls’ state basketball champions before a cheering crowd of 1,500 in the school gym.

1969: Close to 2,500 fans packed the Montezuma High School gymnasium in March 1969 to celebrate the school's first state girls' basketball tournament championship. The Saturday night title game that saw Montezuma beat Allison-Bristow 66-60 was followed by a caravan that picked up hundreds of cars on its way from Des Moines to Poweshiek County.

1977: Southeast Polk's Rae White displays a delicate touch as she launches a shot over West Burlington's Tammy Crafton. White helped propel fifth-ranked Southeast Polk to a 54-48 upset, West Burlington's first defeat in 28 games.

1977: Some 2,500 fans help Southeast Polk celebrate their girls' state basketball championship.

1980: Guard Le Ann Hejlik and a Britt fan smother teammate Barbara Burgart after beating Guthrie Center in the final seconds, 62-61, for the Class 2-A crown.

1980: Britt's Class 2-A champion E'Gals earn their first state title, 62-61.

1980: Lorri Bauman drives against Bettendorf's Lisa Irvine (11) and Sue Block. East won 74-55.
