Growers asked if 2nd round of payments will make them whole

Will a second round of trade mitigation payments make U.S. growers whole? That question was posed at the University of Missouri Crop Conference by MU professor Scott Brown at the MU Crop Conference. None of the farmers attending this event answered.

Brown says the second round of payments announced by the USDA will be $1.65 for soybeans, from both rounds of payments. Brown added, “I look at other markets, though, and in corn we get a penny. It’s a good thing maybe many folks went in for both corn and soybean payments at the same time. I think going in to sign up for 1-cent would have been a little deflating, to say the least.”

Brown tells producers if they were late harvesting there’s time to provide proof, “You’ve just got to make sure you go prove production if you haven’t done that yet. My understanding is you’re going to have until early May to prove that production.” Brown says he believes if signed up for the first payments, farmers won’t have to sign up again. The deadline is January 15th.
